Gable Patio Roof Ideas

Firstly, what exactly is a gable patio?

A gable patio is a patio with a gable or pitched, triangular shaped roof. The structure can either be free-standing or can be constructed against an existing wall or structure.

Gable patio roofs are ideal for patio covers, carports, alfresco and entertainment areas, undercover roof extensions or shelter for the front or back paths of the home.

Gable roofs are made from two roofing panels.  These panels are pitched in the centre to create the recognisable triangular gable shape. The two roofing panels meet at the highest point of the roof (usually centred) and form a ridge. This creates the classic and distinctive design of a gable patio roof.

Benefits of a gable patio roof over a flat roof

  • Looks great. A gable patio is visually attractive. It is a universally recognised shape in domestic architecture and creates a sense of warmth and timeless charm. A gable patio can add to the overall aesthetics and beauty of your home.
  • Better ventilation. As the ceiling is higher in the centre this helps with ventilation and will keep the undercover area cooler, especially in summer. This additional space under the roof allows for efficient inflow and outflow of air and heat and ventilation of the undercover space. This keeps you and your guests more comfortable.
  • Keep cooler. As the sun hits the pitched roof from multiple angles, the overall heating time undercover is reduced. With this and better ventilation the area heats up slower and therefore improves comfort.
  • Additional space. Due to the gable patio having a pitched roof there is extra space which makes for a more spacious area. Extra headroom makes a  big difference especially for tall people on a hot day. The extra height also allows for larger vehicles (boats, caravans, trucks, etc) to fit undercover.
  • Better lighting. The gabled patio roof will provide more light into the undercover area. The ends of the gable roof can be left open, or clear panels or windows installed to allow extra light into the zone.
  •  Insulated. If you opt for the gable patio to be insulated this will improve protection from heat and cold and also reduce noise.
  • Affordability. Compared to pergolas, gazebos and other patio styles a gabled patio may be a better investment. A gabled patio can assist in protecting the home from rain and snow, which in turn means it may help you save on repairs and maintenance.
  • Customised pitch. You can personalise the pitch of the roof to suit your needs and space. The pitch makes for a low maintenance roof, due to the slope any debris is more likely to fall off rather than accumulate.
  • Improved drainage. The slant of the gable roof provides drainage that offers better efficiency and ability to clear debris and obstructions from gutters and drains. A gabled roof is highly efficient when dispersing weather events like rain, hail or snow. This provides better overall protection to the home
  • Low maintenance. The simplicity of the gable design means low maintenance. Steel or aluminium frames are highly resistant to weather and require very little attention throughout the years. Generally less time spent cleaning gutters and drains as well, as the slope of the roof assists in removing any debris.
